I do love my country rustic weddings, but as well as the hay bales and bunting I am also quite partial to a modern wedding. I love clean lines and minimalistic decor, whites with pops of colour! So when this wedding from Nicola Thompson landed in my inbox I knew I had to share it with you. Ruth and Stephen were married on 28th December at St Peter & Paul Church, then the reception at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester. ‘The Lowry is such a modern, vibrant venue with fantastic architecture. The room for the wedding breakfast was a glass walled, circular room about 5 floors up which looked out over Salford Keys – spectacular views all evening. We also love the vibe in the city centre and thought it would work well for our wedding since it was over Christmas. We had 140 day guests in the day and 170 for the night do, it took around ten months to plan. my husband is very organised!’
‘Modern and contemporary reception with a traditional, religious ceremony. Laid back and minimalist.’

Nicola said about the day………….
“I just love a city wedding, especially at Christmas! The festivities started at Ruth’s Mum’s house which had been decorated so beautifully (well done Ruth’s Mum!) and was a treat to photograph. Ruth had a special dressing room created by her Mum full of wedding goodness which was fabulous. The reception at The Lowry was just perfect for Christmas time too – full of twinkly lights, colourful walls, interesting little places to photograph so I really was in my element. Ruth looked stunning too and I absolutely loved the dress with the lace bolero it really suited the style of the day – beautiful.”

How they met
We actually meet at school but got together later; we have been an item for around 6 years
The proposal
Christmas morning in front of the tree; it was our first Xmas in our first home together. Perfect!

Why did you choose your photographer?
Nicola photographed our friend’s wedding so we had seen her work and loved it. We wanted a laid back, creative style, someone who could make use of the colour and lighting in the venue, and Nicola certainly did!

The dress
I found the dress in a store in Hale. It wasn’t the right fit so I had it altered to be perfect and it ended up being quite bespoke! I decided to add a lace bolero made to slip on over the dress which really added something different.
The suit and bridesmaids
Suit from Reiss; very smart! Bridesmaids dresses from Coast, little flower girls in a traditional polka dot Sunday dress from a shop called Mayoral in Spain (I used to live in Spain!)

Theme or colour scheme
Navy and ivory was the colour scheme
Food
Mediterranean vegetables and chicken for main and Manchester Tart for dessert!
Entertainment
A fantastic band called Soundwave, highly recommended!

Flowers and Decoration
Gypsophila was used for the table centrepieces in big clusters in tall vases – it looked amazing! Lots of white lace and twinkly lights
Personal /DIY touches
Each guest received a fair-ground style bag of retro sweets with our names printed on bag…the table plan was luggage tags strung across a lovely mirror (courtesy of or maid of honour!) And the cake was made by a friend of the family who appeared on The Great British Bake Off!

Special moments
A really lovely, warm ceremony surrounded by family followed by fantastic entertainment from the band with everyone dancing.
Advice
Try and take care of little loose ends as early as possible (place names, gifts etc). Last minute rushes are almost always inevitable but can be stressful and costly!
Biggest surprise
How many people came – there seemed to be hundreds! How good the band were and how handsome my husband looked!
